Lots of people talk about celebrities who knit, but what about us crocheters? Surely just as many (or more) celebrities prefer hooks to needles and spend their time off-screen creating crocheted crafts. Here are a few that we all know and love that love to crochet.
Patricia Arquette
Best known for her work on the television show Medium and for her highly-acclaimed role in the film Boyhood, Arquette is also known for her charity work. In 2008 she became involved with the charity “Knit One, Save One,” which collects knitted and crocheted hats for needy infants around the world.
Madonna
Our favorite Material Girl enjoys making her own material out of yarn and hooks. It’s been widely reported that the singer favors crochet, but as far as we know she hasn’t incorporated it into her set list just yet.
Estelle Getty
Known for her role on The Golden Girls as the whip-smart and sassy mother Sophia, Estelle Getty loved to crochet during her downtime on set. During the seven year run of the show, she was shown crocheting during one episode. Fun fact: though Getty played the mother of character Dorothy, in reality she was two months younger than Bea Arthur (who played Dorothy).
Aretha Franklin
C-R-O-C-H-E-T! This amazingly successful singer songwriter has brought the house down more times than anyone can count. The first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, her favorite crochet stitch is reported to bt eht pineapple stitch.
Eva Longoria
After making her debut on the television show Beverly Hills: 90210, Longoria went on to find fame on the smash hit Desperate Housewives. She is known to spend down time in her trailer crocheting to stay calm and focused.
Alyssa Milano
Known for her role as Phoebe on the television show Charmed, Milano is a self-described crocheter in her 2009 autobiography. She’s also been filmed crocheting in films such as WiseGal, and confirmed on Twitter that she enjoys the craft.
Debra Messing
Most know her as character Grace Adler from the television hit Will and Grace. She’s also known for her work on The Starter Wife and Smash, and in films such as The Wedding Date. In the early 2000s, she crocheted a square for a charity project that featured celebrities who crochet and knit.
Bette Midler
This famous songbird is well known around the globe for her inspiring anthems and huge vocal power. She admitted during an interview that she started crocheting when her daughter was born, something we’re sure many crocheters can relate with it!
Raven Symone
After starting her career as a child on a television sitcom, she went on to star in That’s So Raven on the Disney channel, where she can be seen crocheting in an episode. She’s also starred in films like Xenon: Girl of the 21st Century and Revenge of the Bridesmaids.
Jane Seymour
Loved for her work as Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman, Seymour is an enthusiastic crafter who has admitted to making her own clothes with knitting, crochet, sewing, and embroidery.
Meryl Streep
12 time Oscar nominee Meryl Streep is a magnet for record-busting films. She’s the favorite actress of many (in every generation), and she’s reported to be an enthusiastic crocheter of afghans.
Catherine Zeta-Jones
This Welsh actress is known for her work in many films, and in her role as Velma Kelly in the film adaptation of the musical Chicago. She has been interviewed for craft magazines where she readily admits to being an enthusiastic crocheter.
